'SHOWCASE' The Story of the Eisteddfod

SHOWCASE
The Story of the Jersey Eisteddfod

was launched on Monday 1st March
as a celebration of the nine decades in which
The Eisteddfod has been an integral part of island life.

The high quality, hardback book is a history and a record, enlivened by anecdotes, memories and a large number of illustrations.

Profits from sales will benefit in equal measure the Jersey Eisteddfod and the island's learned society, the Société Jersiaise.

Books are available for purchase at
Le Société, or bookshops.

Volunteers required

The Jersey Eisteddfod is run by the people of Jersey for the people of Jersey. Owing to its continued growth we are in need of:

people with secretarial skills,
people who are computer literate
people who are good at organisation and
people who prefer being organised.

The time commitment needed would be anything from the odd hour, to something more substantial. Some people are only free in the daytime, some only in the evening, some maybe both.

If you would like to know more, please contact Mrs Christine Hamon. Tel: 01534 854529. E-Mail: admin@jerseyeisteddfod.org.je

Friends of the Eisteddfod

Become a 'Friend' and help continue the work of the Eisteddfod. In order to keep the Eisteddfod alive and flourishing extra finance, apart from sponsorships received from Deutsche Bank Offshore and the Jersey Arts Trust, is required.

You can help by becoming a 'Friend'. Subscription rates are from £15 for Friends or £50 for Corporate Friends. Please join and lend your support to the Jersey Eisteddfod.

Deutsche Bank Festival of Creative Arts [Spring Festival]

There is a large number of skilled people on the island, and we aim to encourage as many as possible to enter their particular art or craft in the Jersey Eisteddfod for the enjoyment of others in the community. Entrants have the opportunity of having their work appraised by Adjudicators from England and can often gain valuable information from this. The Festival held in March each year, is truly well worth a visit to see the wide variety of arts and crafts produced in our community.

Open to all age groups, from 5 years of age to under 18 in the Youth Section and upwards from 18 years of age in the Adult Section.

A wide range of classes, from Oils and Watercolours through to Etchings and Calligraphy with new classes being added from time to time according to demand. The Crafts Section covers a much more diverse range of skills with such classes as Ceramics and Pottery, Glass Engraving, China Painting, Woodcarving, Woodturning and General Woodcraft to name but a few. Three Trophies are awarded by the Adjudicators each year for outstanding achievements, one for the Art Section, one for Crafts and the third for a given Theme which entrants may wish to enter their work in. Generally, entries can be on any subject but some entrants prefer the extra challenge of working on the particular Theme chosen by the Committee each year. The Syllabus/Entry Forms are available now on this Website and also will be available from the Arts Centre and WHSmith in the Autumn, allowing plenty of time for entrants to work on their pieces. Next year we hope to see an increase on entries in our wonderful new venue at the RJA&HS hall in Trinity.

Our Adjudicators are usually from the UK and are highly regarded in their field and often well known. Adjudicating these Sections is an unenviable task especially when it involves judging such a wide variety of skills, but they accomplish this well as their broad knowledge of the subject has shown. The Art & Crafts Section Committee work well as a team to make sure everything runs smoothly and give of their time during the Exhibition by stewarding etc. We would welcome anyone who may be interested in joining us either as a steward or committee member - our Chairman would be happy to talk to you. Details from Mr Steve Wellum, Tel: 01534 768158. E-Mail: wellum@localdial.com

Photography Section has excellent response for Jersey Eisteddfod, Spring Festival 2004

There has always been a level of good natured rivalry between amateur photographers in Jersey and Guernsey – particularly for the Eisteddfod.

Since the reintroduction of the photography section to the Spring Festival in Jersey four years ago there has been a keen following from both islands and this year saw 180 separate entries and it was interesting to note the very high level of colour print entries.

The adjudicator was Bob Elliott who has been involved in photography for many years and he is a member of ‘Arena’ and ‘The London Salon’. Bob has also been a member of The Royal Photographic Society, Visual Distinction Panel for the last ten years. For his personal work, Bob concentrates on prints, - mainly monochrome using both traditional silver and digital techniques.

In looking forward to the Spring Festival for 2005, the Photography Section hope to encourage greater participation of Student entries through schools. It was further decided that the ‘Special Theme’ would be decided in advance i.e. ‘Water’ so as to give potential entrants the whole of the forthcoming year to prepare.

Deutsche Bank Festival of Performing Arts [Autumn Festival]

A competitive festival of performing arts, held in November and running for three weeks comprises the sections of dance, English speech and drama, French, Jersey Norman French and music. The sections compete annually except for the dance section, which is biennial. Independent adjudicators are engaged for each section, and each competitor receives an appraisal. From it competitors learn how to improve their performance.

With the increasing growth of the festival [in 2002, entries were estimated to be in excess of 2,000] two venues are used simultaneously.
The festival, commonly called the 'Autumn festival' is managed entirely by volunteers and takes place at such venues as St. Helier Parish Church, the Jersey Opera House, the Jersey Arts Centre and Hauté Vallée School.

The Jersey Eisteddfod encourages its competitors to consider the words of Sir Walford Davies: "The ideal of the competitive festival is not to gain a prize or defeat a rival, but to pace one another on the road to excellence".

THE NEXT FESTIVAL OF PERFORMING ARTS WILL TAKE PLACE IN NOVEMBER 2004 [LAST ENTRY DATE 24TH SEPTEMBER]

5.1 Dance

DANCE SECTION

The Jersey Eisteddfod Dance Section participates in the Autumn Festival on alternate years. The next time will be in 2005 when, as usual, the Syllabus will offer a wide range of Dance - from the more traditional forms such as Ballet, National, Greek and Character through to Modern, Song and Dance and Tap.

Participation in the Dance Section of the Eisteddfod continues to expand - in the 2001 Festival, entries increased by 38% and included many competitors from Guernsey dancing schools. During that year, the Section moved back to the Opera House, giving the entrants the opportunity to perform in the magnificently restored theatre - many of them for the first time.

The local Dance Section Committee has teaching members from most of Jersey's dancing schools, as well as a number of non-teaching members, all of whom have had experience in the Dance Section of the Eisteddfod either as competitors or as parents of competitors. The Committee chooses its Adjudicators from the British Federation of Festivals list and many past Adjudicators have mentioned how impressed they have been with the standard of Jersey's young dancers.

There are a number of rules and conditions governing entry into the Dance Section. From time to time these may be updated or amended by the Committee as necessary. When Dance is participating in the Autumn Festival, a list of the rules and conditions may be found on the Jersey Eisteddfod Website, together with the Syllabus for that year. This is normally published around the beginning of June.

The Committee welcomes enquiries regarding the Dance Section. Please telephone the Secretary for further information.

We want to encourage entries from those who like to test their talents and skills against others and believe that the friendly, competitive atmosphere will create enjoyment and the attainment of high standards of performance.

There are classes for solo items as well as those for group entries.

If you have never entered the Eisteddfod before we have classes for 'first time entries''

The festival is about gaining confidence through public performance, and has much more to do with taking part than with winning.

SYLLABUS 2004

ENTRY FORM 2004

History of the Eisteddfod in Jersey

The Jersey Eisteddfod was founded in 1908 by a former Dean of Jersey who saw its competitive classes as a means by which the speech, presentation, and musical standards of his fellow islanders might be improved. With the exception of the years of the two world wars, it has taken place annually ever since.

After its inception it expanded rapidly to encompass other disciplines and crafts, with dance, art, needlework, photography being early additions, which still thrive. It is a notable feature of the liveliness and flexibility of the organisation that sections are discarded when no longer applicable [as laundry, shorthand] but other are adopted and integrated [as youth creative arts and crafts and flower arranging]. The advent of television in the sixties had a depressing effect on entries, but this trend was reversed by the middle of the eighties. From that time there has been a steady increase in interest. There are currently two festivals held annually:
The Festival of Creative Arts, held in March [hereafter referred to as the 'Spring Festival], and the Festival of Performing Arts held in November [hereafter referred to as the 'Autumn Festival'].

Each attracts nearly 3,000 entries, and, via teachers, relations and supporters, it is estimated that the Jersey Eisteddfod reaches a minimum of 10% of the population at any one time. With its continuing growth, it has been necessary to move to larger premises for the Spring Festival, and to operate simultaneously at two venues in the Autumn. There are currently fourteen autonomous sections: Arts and crafts as adult, primary school, secondary school and youth creative arts; photography, flower arranging, video, handwriting and needlework; dance, music, English speech and drama, Norman-French and French. Each section sets its own syllabus, engages one or more adjudicators and supervises the entries and the management of the competitions; and is responsible for communications with the competitors. The management of the Jersey Eisteddfod is accomplished by volunteers who either hold office, or who are enrolled to assist [as in stewarding] on an occasional basis. There are currently over 100 persons recorded as having official status. In 1998 the Jersey Eisteddfod celebrated its 90th anniversary in a day-long event held at Samarès Manor and the year 2008 will see its centenary.

Deutshe Bank

A particular attraction for Deutsche Bank was to lend their support to an event that has such a wide reach across the community - not only have members of staff at some stage participated in the Jersey Eisteddfod but also many of their children now take part. The entrants in both Festivals span all generations from nursery schools to senior citizens.

Since 1997, DB has worked closely with the Eisteddfod publicity committee not only to help bring a contemporary look and feel to the publicity material whilst at the same time retaining its traditional flavour but also to assist in the promotion of the two Festivals each year.

In addition to the agreed sponsorship, in 1998 DB made additional funds available for the Tom Goss Memorial Record Books and in 2000 sponsored four local young performers who, as a result of their successes at the Festival of Performing Arts, had been invited to perform at the British Federation Millennium Festival held in Leeds.

Further information on Deutsche Bank's activities within the community can be found at
http://www.dboffshore.com
.

Deutsche Bank has been joint sponsor, along with the Jersey Arts Trust, of the Jersey Eisteddfod since 1997.

Jersey Arts Trust

The Jersey Arts Trust was established in 1993 with the responsibility to develop, improve and promote the understanding, practise and accessibility of the arts and crafts in Jersey.

The Trust receives an annual grant from the States of Jersey but also attracts sponsorship for a wide range of artistic projects.

The Trust played a central role in the redevelopment of the Jersey Opera House and St James and also provides financial support to the Jersey Arts Centre.

In partnership with Jersey Tourism the Trust also stages a series of arts festivals throughout the year including the Jersey Jazz Festival, Jersey Festival of World Music and International Choir Festival.

If you would like to apply for a grant or to find out more about the ways in which the Trust can assist please contact Chris Clifford.
