| A competitive
Festival of Performing Arts, held in November and running
for three weeks comprises the sections of Dance, English
Speech and Drama, French, Modern Languages (Including German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish) Jèrriais and Music.
The sections compete annually except for the Dance section,
which is biennial. Independent adjudicators are engaged
for each section, and each competitor receives an appraisal.
From it competitors learn how to improve their performance.
With the increasing growth of the Festival venues are
used simultaneously.
The Festival, commonly called the 'Autumn Festival' is managed
entirely by volunteers and takes place at such venues as
St. Helier Parish Church, St Helier Methodist Centre (formerly
Wesley Grove), the Jersey Opera House, the Jersey Arts Centre
and St Ouens Parish Hall.
The Jersey Eisteddfod encourages its competitors to consider
the words of Sir Walford Davies: "The ideal of the
competitive festival is not to gain a prize or defeat a
rival, but to pace one another on the road to excellence".

DANCE SECTION
The Jersey Eisteddfod Dance Section participates in the Autumn Festival on alternate years. The next time will be in 2008 when, as usual, the Syllabus will offer a wide range of Dance - from the more traditional forms such as Ballet, National, Greek and Character through to Modern, Song and Dance and Tap.
Participation in the Dance Section of the Eisteddfod
continues to expand - in the 2003 Festival,
entries increased by 41% and included many competitors
from Guernsey dancing schools. During that year,
the Section moved back to the Opera House, giving
the entrants the opportunity to perform in the
magnificently restored theatre - many of them
for the first time.
The local Dance Section Committee has teaching members from most of Jersey's dancing schools, as well as a number of non-teaching members, all of whom have had experience in the Dance Section of the Eisteddfod either as competitors or as parents of competitors. The Committee chooses its Adjudicators from the British Federation of Festivals list and many past Adjudicators have mentioned how impressed they have been with the standard of Jersey's young dancers.
|
There are a
number of rules and conditions governing entry
into the Dance Section. From time to time these
may be updated or amended by the Committee as
necessary. When Dance is participating in the
Autumn Festival, a list of the rules and conditions
may be found on the Jersey Eisteddfod Website,
together with the Syllabus for that year. This
is normally published during the second week
in May.
The Committee welcomes enquiries regarding the
Dance Section. Please telephone the Chairman
for further information.

We want to encourage entries from those who like to
test their talents and skills against others and believe
that the friendly, competitive atmosphere will create
enjoyment and the attainment of high standards of
performance.
There are classes for solo items as well as those
for group entries.
If you have never entered the Eisteddfod before we
have classes for 'first time entries''
The festival is about gaining confidence through public
performance, and has much more to do with taking part
than with winning. |
